In 1969 the customers had to pay for the smurfs. Before that they were
used as give-aways. Among the early ones many collectors have found
this variation. The Normal smurf painted as a Prisoner. Many times the
trousers are half-painted. I have seen so many of these that I am sure they
were painted like this intentionally. So I had to add it here eventhough I
understand if some collectors do not see this as a variation of the Prisoner. :)
I am sure this was the very first variation of the Prisoner used before the
Prisoner mold was made. Schleich tells us they only made one mold when
they started making the PVC smurfs for BP Holland. The same mold was
painted in three ways. Normal, Gold and Prisoner.
You can find this variation on other smurfy websites also.
More pictures of this variation with half painted trousers. White tail.
The first ones should always be unmarked or only Peyo marked. My guess
would be that the first ones had a happy mouth and one reason they made
a completly new mold was that they wanted a sad mouth on it. On these the mouth
looks almost like a mustache.
